Just another day in the hood.

I was walking down the street going to catch my bus to go to work.  I have to walk three blocks to catch my bus and today it was warm and sunny about 71 degrees.  I love walking through my hood and talking to my neighbors.

I live in on of the last few houses on my street.  The house on the corner of 13th and Bell the Row houses on this street used to be an eye sore but finally someone fixed them and made them decent places to live.  The House across the street from me was abandoned for several years. A housing redevelopment company fixed it up and turned it into a farm house.  This house recently sold for $80,000 which is high for houses in my community.  I walk to the next corner walk pass the bar which is open from 10 am until 2 am.  I pause at the field on Robinson and Bell and say a silent prayer for Jamal Holyfield who was shot to death at that spot on July 7, 2009 at the age of 17. There are a lot of places that have become make shift memorials of young and not so young people who have had their lives stolen in homicides.  Jamal was set up by some girl and shot several times. Several people were out that night yet no one saw anything or so they say.  His case remains unsolved.  His mother will never be the same and every year on the anniversary of his death she is consumed with anger at the girl who set him up.  All we know is her name is Meecka.

A fist fight breaks out on the second block close to the pizza shop.  Two women fighting over money for beer.  The kids are in school so at least only adults are around.  I see the same women sitting out on the porch every day they are always drinking and fighting loudly.  I often wonder if they lived on this street in July of 2009 when Jamal was there and if they saw what happened.  No matter what time I walk past their home these same two women are sitting out on their porch or fighting in the street.  I feel bad for them because they seem as though they have nothing to do that is productive.  I wonder if they have ever held jobs or do they received SSI.  I wonder why they don't find something positive to do with their time rather than sit outside and drink all day.  I feel sad because these women seem to have no life at all and all welfare even SSI keeps you broke and hungry.

I come to the Hoarder House where they have at least 20 or 30 broken lawn mowers and bikes locked on the iron fences.  I remember the husband used to sell these mowers but he died a few years ago and no one has yet to clean up the mess or sell them.  They could have taken those to Josh's steel and could have made some money now its just an eye sore. The trees are overgrown and are hanging on the Power lines.  I wonder when they are going to cut it before the power line breaks and people lose power.

Finally I reach the end of my journey the playground and park and my bus stop.  A shooting had taken place earlier this week a few blocks down on Verona.  The oldest son of my friend Desiree was shot inside his house.  He survived.  Today at the park was three girls and a boy smoking weed and talking about various subjects.  I love my neighborhood and my community.  I have lived in the same zip code my whole life.  Yes I am tired of the violence and watching people I love lose their children or have their child shot.  Every day I pray that we can say that Urban Violence is a thing of the past.  We are always going to have our problems but we can solve them working with each other like the old days.

You live in Braddock? I'm afraid of Braddock its full of Crime.

All my life I have heard this statement all my life.
"You live in Braddock?" They would say with a shocked look on their face. " I'm afraid of Braddock because of the crime rate." They will then clutch their purse like I'm going to steal it. I'm not a criminal despite where I live.

First of all I love where I live its the only Zip Code I remember. I am one of those people who think we should make 15104 a better place by staying here and doing our part.

Most of the people who live in Braddock aren't criminals. The crimes are generally committed by addiction. A stint in Rehab will cure that. The majority of people are hard working poor people. We are also well known for changing the World. We sued the Commonwealth of PA and HUD we won both. We stood up to the Federal Government under that scrondral George Washington who wanted to tax whiskey. You know that as the Whiskey Rebellion. George Washington was here in 1755 as a Colonol in the British army. They lost the Battle and General Edward Braddock was shot here.

AWe have played a big part of history in the United States; we would not be the Super power we are if Andrew Cargnie hadn't of built his first Steel mill in Braddock along side the Monaghelia River. It soon became the Richest Bourough in Allegheny County.  Although, we had a large population of the Wealthy we also had a lot of impoverished and middle class people. Andrew Carnegie insisted that his employees live in 15104.

I grew up in the 70s when the decline began. I do not remember the movie theatres but I remembers the grocery stores and the Bakery. I loved growing up where the adults looked after all the children.  You couldn't misbehave in Braddock without your parents knowing. Unlike today, if an adult told on you parents believed you.

Now the Fettermans have come and has gotten attention and showed a love for our town. They are building it back up but a lot of people are still afraid to come here because of the crime rate. Despite the decrease in violent crime and even non violent crime Braddock still cannot overcome our reputation. That's your loss. Braddock is a wonderful place with good people.

What the hood need? Grocery Stores and Urban gardens

What the hood needs? Grocery stores that the Community can afford. We also need Community gardens. We need a place where we can buy healthy food. Where I live we have a Family Dollar and a butchershop that sells bad food. We have no place to sell fresh vegetables.  Most of the people do not drive they must take a bus or a Jitney to some place else.  During the summer we have a Farmer's Market on Saturday but in the winter we have no access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

When I was a kid this same town had at least four Supermarkets and a whole lot of Mom and Pops grocery stores. Braddock back before was the wealthiest in Allegheny County and now it's one of the Poorest. The New York Times said Braddock was the poorest zipcode.  They also called it Hell and I still haven't forgiven that Braddock is not hell, but I digress, Braddock people can not always afford the cost of a Jitney,  an unlicensed cab station, due to that we cannot do big grocery shopping. That would leave out anything healthy.

Healthy food is a lot more expensive but fruits and vegetables are affordable but they are heavy when you are on the bus and you have no grocery cart.

Stores that come to the Hood needs to be more of moderate to inexpensive foods because stores such as Trader Joe's or whole Foods are to expensive and will fail.

It would help seniors who could walk to the store or young mothers who cannot afford a jitney and doesn't drive.

What About Our Issues?

I have either been involved with or have been heavily recruited into joining some causes.

My main cause is urban violence and other urban issues like hunger, homelessness, lack of affordable grocery stores, etc.  When I mention this to the very people who want me to help them, they tell me it's not as important to them. This is one of the things I hear: “It's not real. Black people do not kill each other; it's white cops doing it.” This comes from Black Lives Matter.

“What about the black babies killed by abortion?” comes from black pro-lifers.

“We need to defeat Trump first,” said one member of the Trump Resistance.

I'm tired of hearing that my issue doesn't matter. We are dying daily and you think we don't matter.

Sit me out of all your causes. I'm too busy fighting for my people.

15104 Till I Die

I have lived in the same zip code for most of my life. I do not remember living anywhere else and I don't want to either. I am 15104 till I die which means I will always live in one of three Boroughs; North Braddock, Braddock, and Rankin.  Right now I live in North Braddock having just moved from Braddock.

Braddock was the place where Andrew Carnegie built his first steel mill that is still operating today. The Edgar Thompson plant was built in 1875 and continues to this day. This plant and others in the Pittsburgh Area helped turned the United States into the Superpower it is today.

The Steel Industry began to decline in the 70s and by the 80s the area was turning into a ghetto. The businesses began leaving in droves and now all we have is a butcher shop, a variety store, and a Family Dollar. We also have a wonderful Mayor and his beautiful wife. Who are working hard to rebuild the once great town.

The Streets were starting to get bad when I was a child. Drugs had moved in and the school district was poorly funded and not able to offer a good education. This has shown up recently because I have been thinking of going back to school to get my degree and I do not know how to do basic stuff like Research papers and essays. I am learning how to do this for myself now although I have a great support system that includes my best friend who has a Ph.d. I had to put that in there because I love to brag about my bestie..

I joined a gang at the age of 11 it was just a local street gang with no bells or whistles. In 1986 the CRIPS came to town and we became CRIPS. I began selling drugs at the age of 14 and sold drugs for years. Again with the help of my Bestie I stopped selling drugs.

I will go into that life in a later post because I want to get in the details of this zip code. The Community that the New York Times called "Hell". I'm still salty about that.

The Mayor of Braddock was not born here nor is he poor. His Wife was born in Brazil and she came here illegally as a child. She runs The Free Store where everything is free from donated items. She is another good friend of mine who is a kind caring person. Her husband ran for US Senator and came in third place although he did better than anyone expected. He is a leader and The State Democratic party will recognize what a star they have.

I have included a picture of John Fetterman that shows his tattooed arms. On one arm has the dates of everyone murdered in the town of Braddock since he became Mayor. He has done wonders lowering the homicide rate and not by locking everyone up but by helping the young people get jobs. When young people work they are less likely to be tempted into selling drugs or committing violent crime.  To bad people who are the so called experts never talk to him or even to the people who used to gang bang I'm one of those people.
